Our new Mission and Vision

For immediate release

This March, Transmission Ministry Collective will celebrate its five year anniversary. 

Transmission Ministry Collective (TMC) was founded in March 2020 as an online community by and for trans people from Christian backgrounds, with a single support group meeting once a week. We are now made up of more than 500 gender-expansive folks, primarily in North America but also representing at least 8 other countries. Our programs and missional focus have expanded to include six support groups, a 24/7 online community space, opportunities for in-person community building, a quickly expanding mutual aid network, and an education program for churches and church leaders looking to better support their trans and gender-expansive community members.

As we look back on our five year history, it seems like an appropriate time to reflect on the words we use to tell our story and describe the vision we are building towards together. In fall 2024, our staff and board members met for a three day retreat, with the aim of connecting with one another and imagining the next phase of TMC’s existence.

Together, this team created a new mission and vision statement for Transmission Ministry Collective. We also identified a set of five values which we see at work in everything we do, and that we hope continue to provide a foundation for future growth. We are excited to share these with you, and to invite the community to join in the energy which they bring to our shared work of trans and gender-expansive faith, community, and liberation.

In the coming weeks and months, we will be sharing more about each of these statements, as well as opportunities for the community to come together to mark our anniversary and dream about what comes next. We look forward to celebrating with you!

Mission

To connect and empower trans and gender-expansive people within a Christian context to explore gender and spirituality, share holistic care, and develop as leaders, and to educate and inspire change in broader faith communities.

Vision

To cultivate the full spectrum of trans flourishing and build toward a world where all are made free.

Values

• Interdependent Community As a collective, we shape our community together, and strive towards mutuality and reciprocity. We think of holistic care as something we offer to each other, rather than something provided from the top down. None of us is in this alone; we are interconnected, and each of us has a part to play in building a space where everyone can heal, grow, and thrive.
• Inclusive Spirituality Our community members represent a rich and varied range of religious and spiritual backgrounds, practices, and traditions. Most have experienced both marginalization and meaning in Christian contexts, and many are still exploring the role faith will have in their future. We honor each unique journey with the Divine, and celebrate the many ways in which God speaks to us individually and as communities.
• Courageous Leadership Due to historic and continued marginalization, there is a lack of representation of trans and gender-expansive people in leadership in Christian institutions at every level. We believe the leadership of trans and gender-expansive people has the potential to be a catalyst for needed change in the church and world, and are committed to equipping and empowering our members to lead from their own distinct perspectives and gifts.
• Collaborative Justice We recognize that our liberation as trans and gender-expansive people is bound up with the liberation of all those who are marginalized and oppressed; none of us is free until we are all free. Our faith leads us to action in solidarity with those fighting for justice around the world. We also acknowledge the ways that Christianity has been used as a tool of white supremacy, colonization, and other forms of injustice, and commit to efforts to repair that harm.
• Resilient Joy We believe in the power of prefiguring the world we want to see through play, pleasure, imagination, storytelling, and celebration. We refuse to lose sight of the Divine image within each of us, which leads us into creativity and abundance. Being seen and loved in the fullness of who we are frees us to experience and share a Resurrection joy that will transform the world.
