This first gathering of the Building Trans Affirming Churches Cohort will give you an opportunity to get to know your fellow cohort members, get an overview of what the next three months will look like, and get oriented to the TMC Community spaces.
Explore how ancient Near Eastern texts and cultural norms illuminate biblical passages often used against LGBTQ+ individuals. We'll examine Mesopotamian and Assyrian sources to understand how concepts of hierarchy, honor, and social status—not modern notions of sexuality—shaped these ancient prohibitions. Learn to read scripture through an intersectional lens that centers marginalized voices.
Did you know that gender-expansive people have existed throughout Christian history? Church history is full of people who not only transgressed gender norms but who were celebrated for it! This 90-minute workshop explores the broad history of gender-expansiveness in Early through Medieval Christianity by looking at saints whose lives and writings challenge binary gendered norms.
This workshop will examine the role ritual can play in the lives of transgender Christians. Participants will be given a brief overview of main ideas from the field of ritual studies, explore how ritual can be spiritually enriching for those who transition, and be invited to reflect on the role ritual can play in their own lives.
